A major American chemical company. Headquartered in Danbury, Connecticut. Founded in 1917 as Union Carbide & Carbon Corp., the company was formed when Union Carbide Co. (established in 1898) and three other companies merged. The company initially produced acetylene, electrodes, dry batteries, etc., but in 1920 it expanded into synthetic chemicals and in 1939 into synthetic resins.
