Codified law is when law exists in the form of a document written in letters, which is its source of existence. In contrast, unwritten law refers to sources of law other than codified law. Codified law is also called statutory law. Japan belongs to the European continental law system, and codified law exists in almost every area of national life. In this way, when codified law is the basis of national law, it is called codification. In contrast, in common-law countries, the accumulation of court precedents forms the core of national law, and they follow either case law or unwritten law.
