Willem Usselincx

A merchant from Antwerp who was active in the Netherlands from 1567 to 1647. He went to Amsterdam in 1591. A fervent Calvinist, he wanted to build an ideal Dutch Protestant nation in America, and to seize the wealth of the New World from Spain to gain an advantage in the Dutch War of Independence (the Eighty Years' War). In an attempt to put his plan into practice, he presented draft charters for the West India Company in 1604 and 1618, but because he insisted on fighting to the end against Spain, his plan was not accepted by the government at the time, which was leaning toward a truce.

オランダで活動した，アントワープ出身の商人。1591年アムステルダムに赴く。熱心なカルバン主義者であった彼は，アメリカにオランダ人プロテスタントの理想の国を築くとともに，新大陸の富をスペインから奪いオランダ独立戦争(八十年戦争)を有利に進めようと考えた。その構想を実現に移そうと，1604年と18年に西インド会社特許状草案を発表したが，スペインに対して徹底抗戦を主張したために，その計画は休戦に傾いていた当時の政府のいれるところとはならなかった。
