Prunus tomentosa - Prunus persica

Japanese: ユスラウメ - ゆすらうめ
Prunus tomentosa - Prunus persica

A deciduous shrub of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). Native to China, it has been cultivated since the early Edo period. Its name is said to be derived from the Korean word Isara, which means "the joy of moving this tree around" because it is resistant to transplanting. It grows to a height of 2-3 meters, and has curly hairs on young branches. The leaves are alternate, obovate, 5-7 cm long, sharply pointed at the tip, and have fine sawtooth edges. The upper surface is wrinkled with short hairs, and the underside and petioles are densely covered with curly hairs. In April, the white or pale pink-white flowers, 1.5-2 cm in diameter, bloom before the leaves or at the same time as the new leaves. There are five obovate petals, many stamens, and one pistil. The fruit is a spherical drupe about 1 cm in diameter, with fine hairs on the surface, and ripens red in June and is edible. One variety is Gin-Yusura, which ripens to a white color. It is a sun-loving tree that is planted in the garden and propagated by seed or division.
