Indirect arc furnaces are generally used in places where the metal is melted, but the furnace is heated by a direct arc.
[Direct Arc Furnace]
A typical example is the Heloup furnace, which was completed in 1900 by the Frenchman PLT Heloup (Figure 1). Scrap metal is charged into the furnace, and a three-phase AC arc is generated between the scrap metal and three artificial graphite electrodes to produce steel.

[Electric steel furnace]
The most widely used steelmaking furnaces for making steel from scrap iron are the Héroux arc furnace and the high-frequency induction furnace. The Héroux arc furnace (Figure 2) is a type of direct arc furnace, also known simply as the Héroux furnace. It was invented by PLT Héroux of France in 1900, and in 1906 a 4-ton furnace was built in the United States and began melting steel.
