… Quenching occurs in the following ways: (1) the emission molecule loses its excitation energy through collision with a quenching substance, (2) a chemical reaction occurs through collision with a quenching substance, or an intermolecular compound that does not emit light is formed, or (3) the emission molecule changes to a molecular state that does not emit light through non-radiative transition or decomposition reaction. Therefore, quenching can be induced by collision with other quenching substances, or it can be due to external factors such as infrared irradiation (infrared quenching), temperature increase (thermal quenching or temperature quenching), or application of a magnetic field. Quenching due to an increase in the concentration of emission molecules is called concentration quenching or self-quenching. …
