A type of bridge in which girders or trusses are supported by cables stretched diagonally from towers on the piers. Similar bridges have been built from wood or steel in Germany, England, France and other countries since the late 18th century, but modern cable-stayed bridges began to be built around 1955, mainly using German technology. In Japan, cable-stayed bridges began to be built around 1960, and many have been built. Cable-stayed bridges are generally an economical type of bridge with a span of 100 to 500 meters, and are also aesthetically pleasing.
