A port town in the Western Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa. Population 17,000 (1970). It is called Mossel Bay in English. It is located on the Indian Ocean coast, 246 nautical miles east of Cape Town by sea and 500 km by rail, and its port facilities are located on the northern tip of the cape surrounding the bay of the same name. It is known as a convenient port to avoid the wind and waves from the south, and as a resort with several beautiful beaches. Bartolomeu Dias first stopped there in 1488, Vasco da Gama called at the port in 1497, and Pedro Dataide landed there in 1500 to escape a storm.
