Its official name is United States Steel Corp. It is the largest steel company in the United States. In 1900, JP Morgan acquired Carnegie Steel, the largest at the time, and in 1901, it was incorporated into a trust with eight other companies. At the time of its establishment, it accounted for more than 70% of steel production in the United States, and thereafter dominated the market as the price leader. In the 1960s, the company was forced to expand into the United States, and the scale of its operations was greatly reduced due to the advancement of Japanese and other companies, as well as the deterioration of its facilities. In 1982, it acquired Marathon Oil Company, strengthened its oil business, and promoted a policy of moving away from steel. In 1986, the company name was changed to USX Corp. In 1991, USX-US Steel Group, which is responsible for the steel division, and USX-Marathon Group, which is responsible for the oil division, were established, and USX became the holding company that oversees the two companies. In 2001, USX Corp. was spun off. The US Steel Group, the largest steel manufacturer in the United States, became independent as United States Steel Corporation. In 2000, it partnered with Kobe Steel to produce steel sheets for automobiles. Its head office is in Pennsylvania. Its sales for the fiscal year ending December 2010 were $17,374 million.

正称はUnited States Steel Corp.。米国最大の鉄鋼会社。1900年J.P.モルガンが当時最大のカーネギー製鋼を買収，これを中心に翌1901年，その他８社が大合同して成立したトラスト。成立時，米国鉄鋼生産の70％以上を占め，以後プライスリーダーとして市場を支配した。1960年代には日本などの進出におされ，また設備の老朽化なども重なり事業規模は大幅に縮小された。1982年マラソン石油会社を買収，石油事業を強化して脱鉄鋼政策を進めた。1986年社名もUSX Corp.と変更。1991年，鉄鋼部門を担当するUSX−USスチール・グループ，石油部門を担当するUSX−マラソン・グループを設立し，USXは２社を統括する持株会社となった。2001年USX Corp.は分社化。アメリカ最大の鉄鋼メーカーのUSスチールグループはユナイテッド・ステーツ・スチール社として独立。一方のマラソン・グループは採掘から精製，販売まで行う大手総合石油会社マラソン・オイル社として発足した。神戸製鋼所と2000年に自動車用鋼板の生産で提携。本社ペンシルバニア州。2010年12月期売上高173億7400万ドル。
