A marine red alga of the Rhodomelaceae family. Four or more tubular pericentric cells surround a single tubular central cell, and the nodes thus formed connect to form a filamentous or cylindrical body. The scientific name "poly" (multiple) and "siphon" (tube) come from this. There are many species, with more than 30 species known to grow just off the coast of Japan. The body is forked or forked-like alternately, and the branches further produce small branches, with the entire body often becoming tufted. Sexual reproduction is by egg cells and sperm, and asexual reproduction by tetraspores. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
学名のpoly(多),siphon(管)はこのことに由来する。
