Prince Munetaka

Japanese: 宗尊親王 - むねたかしんのう
Prince Munetaka
Born: November 22, 1242, Kyoto
[Died] July 29, 1274. The 6th Shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate in Kyoto (in office 1252-66). Poet. The first son of Emperor Gosaga. His mother was the daughter of Taira Munemoto (according to one theory, Munehan), and was a lady-in-waiting to Shijo-in Hyoe. In 1252, he went to Kamakura as the first Miya Shogun in place of Fujiwara Yoritsugu, and in 1265, he was made First Rank Nakatsukasakyo. He held the position of Seii Taishogun until he was deposed on July 4, 1273, on suspicion of plotting a rebellion against the Hojo clan. After being deposed as Shogun and returning to Kyoto, he became a monk and died in obscurity. He studied waka poetry under Fujiwara Tameie, Fujiwara Motoie, and Mitsutoshi (Ben'nyudo Shinkan), and often hosted poetry gatherings and poetry contests in the Kamakura Shogunate. There are several family anthologies, such as "Yanagiba Wakashu" and "Keigyoku Wakashu" (compiled by Shinkansen).
