A representative work by Motoori Norinaga. It consists of 44 volumes. He began studying the Kojiki in 1764 (Meiwa 1) and completed it in 1798 (Kansei 10). Norinaga was 69 years old at the time. Publication began in 1790 and was published by Eirakuya in Nagoya, but only up to volume 17 was published during his lifetime, and the entire series was finally published in 1822 (Bunsei 5). Volume 1 is titled "General Commentary on Ancient Records, etc." and includes "Naobi no Mitama," which could be said to be the culmination of his theory on ancient ways. Volume 2 is a reading and interpretation of the preface, a genealogy from the gods to Emperor Jomei, and volumes 3 and onwards are annotations of the main text. Volumes 1 to 17 are the first volume of the Kojiki, volumes 34 to 44 are the second volume, and volumes 44 to 5 are the third volume. Norinaga's commentaries still have value that can withstand criticism today, and many studies are based on his textual revisions, readings, definitions, and annotations. However, they are based on the premise that ancient documents should be believed as they are, and they often have the drawback of leaping into the world of irrationality.
