HLB is used as one of the means to express the characteristics of surfactants. It is an abbreviation for hydrophilic-lipophilic balance, which is an empirical value obtained by expressing the balance between hydrophilic and lipophilic groups in the molecule, and is expressed as a value between 0 for those with no hydrophilic groups and 20 for those with no lipophilic groups.
