Yurakucho - Yurakucho

Japanese:
Yurakucho - Yurakucho

The area is located in the southeastern corner of Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, around JR Yurakucho Station. In the early Edo period, the residence of Oda Nagamasu (pen name Uraku, younger brother of Oda Nobunaga), a disciple of Sen no Rikyu, was located here, and in 1872 (Meiji 5), the town was named after him. The teahouse built in the Sukiya style on the residence gave the name of Sukiyabashi Bridge, which spans the outer moat. There are theaters, movie theaters, department stores, and other facilities in the area, making it one of the busiest areas in the city center. The east side of the station, which borders Ginza, was redeveloped with the opening of the Shinkansen, and Tokyo Transportation Center was built (1965). Furthermore, the old Nippon Theater and the Asahi Shimbun Company (which moved to Tsukiji) were demolished and replaced with the Yurakucho Center Building (Marion), which houses a department store and movie theater (1984). The west side of the station, adjacent to Hibiya, is lined with office buildings and theaters, and the former site of the Hibiya Cinema and Yurakuza Theater was rebuilt into a commercial building for fashion and gourmet food (Hibiya Chanter) (1987). In addition, redevelopment of the area in front of the station in the 2000s led to the construction of a complex commercial facility (Yurakucho ITOCIA) (2007). In addition to JR, the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi, Yurakucho, Hibiya, and Chiyoda lines, and the Toei Mita line run through the area, making it very convenient for transportation.
