Name of theater. (1) Japan's first Western-style theater, built in Yurakucho, Tokyo, as a high-class entertainment hall. Opened November 1, 1908. Capacity including the box seats was 900 people. Chairs were installed in the traditional flat dirt floor, and eating, drinking, and smoking were prohibited in the spectator seats, and a separate dining room and rest room were installed. The teahouse entrance was abolished and a ticket system and guides were introduced. After the first performance of the Jiyugeki Theater by Oyamauchi Kaoru and Ichikawa Sadanji II, it was often used by the new theater companies of the time, and played a major role in the early history of new theater. In 1920, it was merged with the Teigeki Theater and remodeled to be more modern, but it was destroyed by fire in the Great Kanto Earthquake. (2) A theater affiliated with Toho that opened in June 1935 on the site of (1). Seating capacity 1,630. Toho Theater Company, Furukawa Midoriha Troupe, Enoken Troupe, and others mainly performed here, and after World War II, new theater companies also used it. In January 1951, it became a movie theater, and closed in November 1984. Hibiya Chanter, a mini theater, was built on the site.
