A volcanic lake in the northwest of the Kushiro Regional Development Bureau in eastern Hokkaido. It has a circumference of 26 km, an area of 13.3 square km, a maximum depth of 44.8 m, and a water surface elevation of 420 m. The lake was formed by the subsidence of the surrounding area and the damming of volcanic ejecta after Mount Oakan (1,370 m) erupted in the center of the Akan Caldera, which was formed by volcanic activity and has a major axis of about 24 km and a minor axis of 13 km. The lake was formed by the subsidence of the surrounding area and the damming of volcanic ejecta. The Akan River flows out from the southeast corner. The lake shore has many inlets and outlets, and Oshima, Koshima, Yaitai Island, and Churui Island float in the lake. Marimo live in the water near the mouth of the Churui River and the Kinetanpe River in the northeast, and it has been designated a special natural monument. It is the native habitat of the Japanese char, and smelt is cultivated in the lake waters. It is one of the scenic spots in Akan Mashu National Park, where a mixed forest of coniferous and broadleaf trees such as Yezo spruce, Todo fir, and silver birch trees approaches the lake shore. The Siberian azalea in spring and the autumn leaves are particularly beautiful. Mount Oakan rises to the east, and Mount Me-Akan (1,499 meters) to the southwest. Lake Akan Onsen (simple hot spring, water temperature about 60°C) gushes out on the south shore, and a settlement is formed. National Route 240 passes through the lake, and Route 241, which branches off from it, connects it to Obihiro and Teshikaga. Lake Akan was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland in 2005.
