Baba Tsunego - Baba Tsunego

Journalist. Born in Okayama Prefecture on July 13, 1875. After dropping out of Doshisha and Tokyo Senmon Gakko (the predecessor of Waseda University), he joined The Japan Times newspaper. In 1909 (Meiji 42), he went to the United States and worked in New York as an editor for the English magazine Oriental Review. In 1913 (Taisho 2), he returned to The Japan Times, but the following year he moved to The Kokumin Shimbun, where he served as head of the political department and editor-in-chief. He left the company in 1924 and became a commentator, and devoted himself to the universal suffrage movement and the formation of a proletarian political party. During the war, he was banned from writing as a liberal commentator. In December 1945 (Showa 20), after the president of The Yomiuri Shimbun, Matsutaro Shoriki, was arrested on suspicion of war crimes, he was welcomed as president of the company, a position he held until January 1951. During this time, he weathered the second Yomiuri dispute, served as chairman of the Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association, and was awarded the first Newspaper Culture Award. He passed away on April 5, 1956. His books include "Contemporary People Criticism," "A History of the Konoe Cabinet," "Recollections and Hope," and "Autobiography Sketches."
