Maitreya faith

Belief in Bodhisattva Maitreya Maitreya preaches to the heavenly beings in the Pure Land of Tushita Heaven, but after 5.67 billion years, he is said to appear in this world to save all living beings. From this, the belief in rebirth in the afterlife to the Tushita Heaven of Maitreya and the belief in rebirth in the present world to coincide with Maitreya's rebirth in the afterlife became popular. The belief in rebirth in the afterlife was practiced in ancient times, while the belief in rebirth in the afterlife was practiced from the Middle Ages to the early modern period.

弥勒菩薩に対する信仰
弥勒は浄土である兜率天 (とそつてん) で天人のために説法しているが，56億7000万年ののち，この世に現れて衆生を救済するとされている。そこから弥勒の兜率天に往生しようとする上生信仰と，弥勒の下生に合わせて現世に再生したいという下生信仰とが盛んとなった。上生信仰は古代に行われ，下生信仰は中世〜近世に行われた。
