...French painter. Born in Avignon. He lived in Italy for 20 years from 1734, and in 1743 was registered with the painters' guild in Rome. He mainly painted landscapes and seascapes in Rome, Tivoli, Naples, and other places. His delicate expression of light, which can be said to be a precursor to Corot's, can be seen in works such as Ponte Rotto (1745). He returned to France in 1753 and became a member of the Academie. In his 15 seascapes depicting the main ports of France, the expression of light enhances the dramatic effect.
