?-1294 A medieval West Asian music theorist. He worked as a musician and calligrapher at the court of Mustasim, the last Abbasid caliph, but was saved by the conqueror Hulagu Khan, who recognized his talent when he captured Baghdad in 1258, and was given a high salary and favored treatment at the Ilkhanate court. Safi al-Din is known to have written two works in Arabic: Kitab al-Adwār (The Book of Modes) and Risāla al-Sharafīyya (A Treatise on Music for Sharaf al-Din).
