A city on the Delaware River in the western part of New Jersey, USA, it is the state capital. It has a population of 85,403 (2000). It is located halfway between Philadelphia and New York. It is a key transportation hub for land, sea and air, and has seen remarkable industrial development. A wide variety of industries are located here, including wire cable, which began in 1848, ceramics, rubber products, various metals, auto parts, and textiles. The town was founded by British Quakers around 1679, and became the state capital in 1790. During the American War of Independence, it is famous as the site of the Battle of Trenton, where the American army led by Washington won an important victory in December 1776, and many old buildings remain.
