1013‐1103 A Jewish Talmudic scholar active in the Maghreb and Al-Andalus during the expansion of the Almoravid dynasty. He is also known as Rif, an abbreviation of Rabbi Yitzhak Fassi. He was born in Qar'a Hammad, studied at Kairawan, and lived in Fas (Fes) (hence his name). His answers (responsa) to questions about the Torah sent to him by Jews from all over the world, who sought his fame, gave a distinctive shape to Talmudic research and education at the time. In his later years, he fled to Cordoba after being slandered, and taught at the academy in Lucena, where he died. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
