A teahouse in the Urasenke school of Kyoto. It is said that Matakakushi is a four-and-a-half-tatami room that was built in 1653 (Shoo 2) when Sotan handed over his retirement residence to Koshin and lived there again in retirement. It was rebuilt in 1789 (Kansei 1) after the Tenmei fire. The thatched, gabled roof structure has low eaves, giving it a rustic appearance, and inside there is a toko (alcove) in front of the nijiriguchi (nijiriguchi) and a doko (cabinet) in the temaeza (temaeza). The ceiling is a decorative attic on the half-way street on the nijiriguchi side, and ajiro (latticed wire grating) ceiling on the rest of the room. There are only two windows, one underlay window on each the guest seating side and the nijiriguchi side, and a push-up window, so lighting and openness are extremely restricted. The host's seat is limited to the tea ceremony entrance. While following the style of the four-and-a-half-tatami-mat room perfected by Rikyu, the room emphasizes a more dignified atmosphere by introducing the use of a sawtooth pillar in the inner corner of the tea ceremony seat. This style was widely popular in the Edo period as a typical example of the four-and-a-half-tatami-mat room of the Rikyu style.
