Obakusan (English name) Huang-bo-shan

Obakusan (English name) Huang-bo-shan
A mountain in Anxi County, Fujian Province, China. It is so named because it produces a lot of Phellodendron amplexicaule (→Obaku), which is used for medicine and dye. In the 5th year of the Zhenyuan era (789) of the Tang Dynasty, Zen Master Shokan founded the Prajna Hall here. Later, Zen Master Kiyun (Obaku Kiyun) appeared and made the name of Obaku famous, and during the Song Dynasty it flourished as a major Rinzai Buddhist training center. During the Yuan Dynasty, it temporarily declined, but the Ming Emperor Wanli bestowed upon it an imperial plaque bearing the name "Manpuku Zenji," the entire Tripitaka, and an internal purse, which allowed the temple to be rebuilt. Ingen Ryūki lived here and it flourished for a time, but later fell into decline. In 1654, Ingen traveled to Japan to escape the rebellions that were occurring at the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, at the urging of the chief priest of Sufuku-ji Temple in Nagasaki, Itan Seiyu, and others. He built a temple of the same scale as Obaku-san in Uji, Yamashiro Province, and named it Obaku-san Manpuku-ji Temple.
