Born: April 20, 1908 in Louisville, Kentucky
[Died] August 31, 2002. New York, New York. Jazz musician and bandleader. Full name Lionel Leo Hampton. A master who first introduced the vibraphone to jazz and established its position as a jazz instrument. He was also known as a drummer, pianist, and singer. He entered the jazz world in California in 1928 as a drummer, and in 1930, at the recommendation of Louis Armstrong, he switched to the vibes. In 1936, he was welcomed by the "King of Swing" Benny Goodman, and became a big star with the Goodman Quartet, which included Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa. In 1940, he became independent and formed his own band. He created the appeal of a jump band with a strong movement, and produced a series of hits such as "Flying Home" (1942). It became a pioneering music of rhythm and blues. He was always looking for talented young musicians, and many jazz musicians such as Clifford Brown, Quincy Jones, and Malta came and went from his band. His representative works include "September in the Rain" (1953) and "Stardust" (1955).
