A city in western Ehime Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1935. It occupies the base of the Sadamisaki Peninsula and faces the Uwa Sea and Iyo Nada Sea. Half of the city center was reclaimed land from the Meiji period onwards, and developed as a distribution centre for silkworm cocoons and a fishing port. After World War II, the spinning and sewing industries flourished. It is a base for medium-sized trawlers, has the largest fish market in Shikoku, and produces a lot of processed seafood products. The terraced fields behind it cultivate high-quality iyokan and satsuma mandarin oranges. It is an important link between Shikoku and Kyushu, with the Yosan Line running through it and ferries connecting it to Beppu City and Usuki City on the opposite shore. In March 2005, Honai Town in Nishiuwa County was incorporated. 132.68 km2 . Population: 38,370 (2010). →Related topicsUwa Sea Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
