A genus of fungi in the subphylum Flagellate, class Oomycetes, order Sphaerothecales. It lives a saprophytic life in water, with its hyphae having prominent constrictions and dividing into segments at intervals, hence the name. These segments become zoosporangia, and when they mature, zoospores swim out of the release hole. Sexual reproduction is not known. It is also known as sewage fungus, as it generally grows in the form of wattles in rivers that are drained with organic matter, such as sewage and industrial wastewater. The fungus can be baited by dropping hemp seeds into the water. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
