1874‐1952 German genetic psychiatrist. Born in Switzerland, he studied medicine and genetics at universities throughout Europe, studying under Kraepelin at the University of Munich in 1907, and qualified as a professor in 1909 with a thesis on "Mental Disorders in Life Prisoners." In 1917 he became head of the genetics department at the German Institute of Psychiatry in Munich, in 1925 a professor of psychiatry at the University of Basel, and in 1928 director of the Institute of Genetics at the Kaiser Wilhelm Society in Munich. He placed emphasis on genetic causes as the causes of mental disorders and worked to clarify them, becoming a pioneer in scientific genetic psychiatry.
