An alga that grows in large numbers in the Seto Inland Sea and other inland bays south of the Kinki region during the hot summer months off the coast of Japan, causing red tides and often causing serious damage to farmed fish and shellfish. Also called Cattonella. Hornelia is another name. Its body is single-celled, obovate or spindle-shaped, and it swims by extending two flagella of slightly different lengths from a small depression at the front end. One flagellum that extends forward when swimming has a feather-like structure, while the other that extends backward has a whip-like structure. The cells are divided into ectoplasm and endoplasm, the former containing plastids and the latter containing nuclei. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
