This refers to a part of a forest from the geological era that has been preserved in its original state in the strata. They are often formed by land subsidence (or sea level rise) or rapid burial by volcanic debris. The existence of fossil forests can be detected by fossil soil and upright tree trunks and roots, and they provide good evidence for considering paleoecology and sedimentary environments. Famous examples include Tedori in Ishikawa Prefecture (Mesozoic Era), Sendai (Neogene Period), Uozu in Toyama Prefecture (Quaternary Period), as well as Arizona (Mesozoic Era) and Yellowstone (Paleogene Period) in the United States.
