Qubuz (English spelling)

Japanese: クーブーズ(英語表記)qubuz
Qubuz (English spelling)
A plucked stringed instrument of the lute family that appeared in Turkey around the 10th century. It spread from Arabia to Egypt in the southwest and as far east as China. It was introduced to China during the Yuan Dynasty as an Islamic instrument and was transliterated as "Hobusu (fire-wondering)." According to records in the Yuan History, it has a small body, a leather surface, and four strings. The Tibetan damniyang, which is thought to be the predecessor of the sanxian, has six strings but is of the same family.
