...The common name for kabuki music, which is used for effects, decoration, background, and accompaniment in kabuki performances, and is generally performed behind a black blind (kuromisu), a wooden fence at the bottom of the stage and a black blind hung from a window above. It is also known by other names such as "kuromisu music" and "kagebayashi" (also abbreviated to "kuromisu" or "kage"). However, in the narrow sense, "kagebayashi" often refers to musical instruments performed behind a black blind for entrance music and storytelling.

In addition to the songs, accompaniment, and musical instruments performed behind the stage, there are also the introductory music of Nagauta, which is performed by the musicians on stage together with the singers and shamisen players as background music for Shosagoto, and the kage-hayashi, which is performed behind the stage to accompany it, and the ceremonial music (ritual music) that is not directly related to the performance but is played as a theater custom.
