A coastal city in the state of São Paulo in southeastern Brazil. Population 268,467 (1991). It is located on an island of the same name adjacent to the state's main port of Santos, 53 km south-southeast in a straight line from the state capital, São Paulo. It was established in 1532 by Afonso de Sousa as the first planned settlement with the aim of defending southern Brazil from the French and Spanish, and was elevated to city status in 1700.
