A former town in Kitamorokata County in southern Miyazaki Prefecture. Occupying the northeastern part of the Miyakonojo Basin, it is mostly mountain forest and wilderness. Wasabi and clay roofing tiles are local specialties. The Nippō Main Line runs through the town, and Mt. Aoi in the north is a popular hiking spot. The Fumiyabushi puppet theater is handed down in the area at the foot of the mountain. In January 2006, it was incorporated into Miyakonojo City along with Takasaki Town, Yamada Town, and Takajo Town in Kitamorokata County. 97.50 km2 . 7,452 people (2003).
