Korenobu Ouchi

Japanese:
Korenobu Ouchi
Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A powerful vassal in the early Kamakura period. Son of Koreyoshi. He was known as the Chief of the Sword and the Suruga Daifu Judge. He was often in Kyoto with his father Koreyoshi, and was ordered by the retired Emperor Gotoba to suppress the strong appeals from the Nanto and Hokuriku regions. When his father died around 1219, Korenobu took over as the shugo of Ise, Iga, Mino, Echizen, Tamba, and Settsu. Korenobu's mother was the aunt of the brothers Fujiwara Hideyasu and Hideyoshi, who were close vassals of the retired Emperor Gotoba. This kinship helped Korenobu to develop a close relationship with the retired Emperor, and during the Jokyu War (1221), he sided with the capital. He confronted the Kamakura Shogunate army at Oi-watashi on the Tosando road, but was defeated, which caused the entire capital army to retreat. After the rebellion, he became a monk and lived in hiding on Mount Hiei, but in 1230 he was captured and exiled to the western part of Japan.
