Mother of Hercules, a hero in Greek mythology. Daughter of Electrion, King of Mycenae. She married Amphitryon, who killed her father, on the condition that she avenge the death of her brother. While her husband was away fighting for revenge, she had sex with Zeus, who was in the form of her husband. When her husband returned home, he found out and tried to kill Alcmene, but was prevented from doing so by Zeus' power, and he forgave his wife. She eventually gave birth to Hercules, a son with Zeus, and Iphicles, a son with Amphitryon. After Hercules' death, she was persecuted by Eurystheus, King of Mycenae, and fled to Athens, and when Eurystheus died, she lived a long life in Thebes. After her death, her body was taken to the Isle of Bliss, where she became the wife of Rhadamanthes, the judge of the underworld.
