Japanese: 沈清伝 - しんせいでん(英語表記)Simchǒng-jǒn
The Story of Simchǒng-jǒn
A representative Hangeul novel from the late Joseon Dynasty of Korea. The author and year of its creation are unknown. It was passed down as a story or pansori, but it is thought to have been established as a novel around the 18th century. It is a tale of a filial daughter, set on land and in the Dragon Palace, mixing Confucian and Buddhist ideology. The protagonist, Simcheong, loses her mother when she is seven days old and grows up to be a poor but pretty girl with her blind father. At the age of 15, she prays to Buddha to help her father see, sells herself to a Chinese sailor for 300 koku of rice as an offering, and drowns herself as a sacrifice on the route of the Indangsu River. Simcheong, transformed into a lotus flower, is presented before the emperor, is resurrected, and becomes empress. She holds a banquet for the blind and meets her father, and her father is so happy that he regains his sight. In 1972, the opera was composed by Yun Isang, and premiered in Munich, where it garnered an unprecedented response and became famous worldwide.
