[Digitalis as a herbal medicine]
The leaves are dried and cut into thin strips and used as a cardiac stimulant. When British physician William Withering found out that an old woman was using a family remedy made from more than 20 kinds of herbs to treat edema, he identified the active ingredient as digitalis and introduced it as a diuretic in 1775. The chemical structure of the active ingredient in digitalis leaves has now been clarified, and it is known that the active ingredients are cardiac glycosides called digitoxin and gitoxin.

… Linnaeus was a naturalist, but he was also a physician and herbal medicine researcher, who created the binomial nomenclature system and pioneered the foundations of plant taxonomy. In the late 18th century, W. Withering (1741-99) learned that patients with dropsy had improved with folk remedies, and from the mixture of more than 20 herbs used, he targeted digitalis, discovering that it had a powerful diuretic effect. As the clinical effects were inconsistent, he administered the root, flowers, seeds, and leaves, and found that the leaves had medicinal properties and that powder had a more consistent effect than a decoction. …
