For example, by attaching the fixed wings of an airplane to a helicopter, it is possible to combine the vertical take-off and landing and hovering characteristics of a helicopter with the high speed of an airplane. An aircraft that combines the advantages of two aircraft with different characteristics is called a hybrid aircraft. The word "hybrid" means "mixed breed." The above example is called a winged helicopter, but other hybrid aircraft include a motor glider, which is a glider equipped with a low-horsepower propulsion device that allows it to take off under its own power and glide, an autogyro, which is an airplane equipped with freely rotating rotors that allows autorotation landings and short takeoffs, and a compound helicopter, which is a winged helicopter equipped with a propulsion device.

例えば，ヘリコプターに飛行機の固定翼をつけることによって，ヘリコプターのもつ垂直離着陸特性およびホバリング特性と，飛行機の高速性をあわせもたせるなど，互いに特性の異なる航空機の長所を組み合わせてつくられる航空機をハイブリッド航空機という。ハイブリッドとはあいのこ(雑種)の意味。上述の例は翼付きヘリコプターと呼ばれるが，ハイブリッド航空機には，このほかグライダーに低馬力の推進装置をつけ，自力によって離陸できるとともに滑空も行えるモーターグライダー，飛行機に自由回転をする回転翼を備えオートローテーション着陸や短距離での離陸が行えるようにしたオートジャイロ，翼付きヘリコプターにさらに推進器まで備えた複合ヘリコプター(コンパウンドヘリコプター)などがある。
