A shrimp of the family Procambaridae endemic to Japan (illustration), it lives in mountain streams south of the Hidaka Mountains in Hokkaido, and in Aomori, Akita, and Iwate prefectures. The southern limit of its distribution is Ninohe City, Iwate Prefecture on the Pacific coast, and Odate City, Akita Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast. Because of its limited distribution, it is not as familiar as the American crayfish (illustration), which was introduced from America. It grows to a body length of about 6 cm, but most individuals found in Honshu are about 4 cm, making it much smaller than the American crayfish. It is brown overall, with a flat abdomen dorsally and ventrally that appears wider than the cephalothorax. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
