… After the defeat in the War of Independence (the 1848 Revolution), the country was faced with a difficult period of oppression and terrorism from Austria, but many of the works of Araña and Madáč, who were active during this period, were pessimistic and reflected the times. Other notable figures included the novelist Kemény Zsigmond (1814-75), the allegorical poet Tompa Mihály (1817-68), the poet Vajda János (1827-97), and the critic Gyulai Pál (1826-1909). After this, the Dual Monarchy was formed in 1867 as a result of the Ausgleich (compromise) with Austria, and sober realpolitik brought economic stability, ushering in an era of civil society in which prose flourished. …
