It is short workwear made of linen or cotton, with sleeves like a juban and no collar. The collar is made of the same fabric or a separate navy blue or black cotton. It has been used since ancient times. In Aomori Prefecture, sashikogin (also called kogin embroidery), which is sashiko stitched on linen, is known as "Tsugaru kogin." In Akita Prefecture, it is called "kogin" or "kongi," and in the past it referred to work clothes made of navy blue linen. In Niigata Prefecture, it is called "katakoginu," and in Gifu Prefecture, it is called "kogino." In Nara Prefecture, there is a top half-coat for going to the mountains made of wisteria cloth called "fujikogino," which was used until the Taisho era. 麻または木綿製で,じゅばんのような筒袖,衽(おくみ)なしの丈の短い作業着のこと。襟は共布または別布の紺,黒木綿をつける。古くから用いられていた。青森県では,麻地に刺子をほどこした刺しこぎん(こぎん刺しともいう)が〈津軽こぎん〉として知られている。秋田県では〈こぎん〉〈こんぎ〉といい,古くは紺麻地の野良着のことをいった。新潟県では〈かたこぎぬ〉,岐阜県では〈こぎの〉という。奈良県には〈ふじこぎの〉と呼ばれる藤布(ふじぬの)でつくった山行きの上半衣があり,大正年間まで用いられていた。
