Shigure Hasegawa

Japanese:
Shigure Hasegawa

Playwright. Real name Yasu. Born in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. After learning to read, write and use the abacus at Akiyama Gensen Elementary School, he entered Chikuhakuen to study the classics. After a failed marriage, in 1901 (Meiji 34), he submitted "Uzumibi" to "Jogaku Sekai" and it was selected. In 1905, his play "Umichoon" was selected and performed in the Yomiuri Shimbun, after which he set out as a playwright, and his status was established with "Sakura Fubuki" (1911). In 1916 (Taisho 5), he met Mikami Otokichi and they began living together. In 1918, he published "Nyonin Geijutsu" (Women's Art) with Okada Yachiyo, but it ceased publication after the second issue due to the Great East Japan Earthquake. He later took over and published "Nyonin Geijutsu" (Women's Art) (1928-1932). After the magazine was discontinued, he started publishing "Kagayaku." Although there are limitations due to his old education, his attitude, which is consistent through his writings about women in "Bijin-den" (1918), "Kyubun Nihonbashi" in which he talked about his upbringing, and "Onna no Geijutsu" by Shigure, can be said to be a true expression of humanism and women's liberation.
