A non-reed aerophone used in Western Asia, Central Asia, and North Africa. It is also called nayi or kasaba. Both words mean "reed" and it is often made from thick reed stalks. The standard size is about 50-70 cm long and 2-2.5 cm in diameter. There are 5-7 finger holes on the front and one hole (for the thumb) on the back. The player holds the instrument at a slight angle, places the upper end of the tube on the lower lip or upper teeth, and blows while adjusting the amount and direction of the air with the tongue. The range is usually about two and a half octaves, and the pitch can be changed subtly by breathing technique, fingering (crossed or half-open), and even lip and head movements. It is widely used in classical and folk music ensembles and solos, but in Turkey it is an important solo instrument, especially in Islamic liturgical music.
