A joruri gidayu (playing chant of Japanese folk music). A period piece. Five acts. A collaboration between Asada Iccho, Namioka Geiji, Namiki Soryu, and others. First performed in December 1752 (2nd year of the Horeki era) at the Toyotakeza Theatre in Osaka. The love story between Ariwara no Yukihira and the sisters Matsukaze and Murasame is dramatized with the incident of a dispute over the throne between the parents, King Koretaka and King Korehito. Only the fourth act, "Yukihira's Residence" and "Yukihira's Inner Garden," have been made into kabuki, and it is known by the nickname "Ranpei Monogurui." Yoshio, the son of the traitor Ban Yoshikane, disguises himself as a slave named Ranpei and sneaks into Yukihira's mansion. He pretends to suffer from a strange illness that causes him to go insane when he sees the light of a sword, and steals the Ariwara family tree, but is discovered and fights off many pursuers before being captured by his son Shigezo, who was ordered by Yukihira. The highlights are Ranpei's fake insanity in "Yukihira's Mansion" and the varied, grand fight scenes in "Okuniwa," and the latter in particular is a representative example of vertical Kabuki.

浄瑠璃義太夫(じょうるりぎだゆう)節。時代物。五段。浅田一鳥(いっちょう)、浪岡鯨児(げいじ)、並木素柳らの合作。1752年（宝暦2）12月、大坂・豊竹(とよたけ)座初演。在原行平(ありわらのゆきひら)と松風・村雨姉妹の恋物語に、惟喬(これたか)・惟仁(これひと)両親王の御位(みくらい)争いの事件をあわせて脚色。四段目「行平館」「同奥庭」だけが歌舞伎(かぶき)で伝わり、「蘭平物狂(らんぺいものぐるい)」の通称で知られる。謀反(むほん)人伴義兼(ばんよしかね)の子義雄(よしお)が行平の館へ奴(やっこ)蘭平に身をやつして入り込み、刀の光を見ると狂気する奇病を装って在原の系図を盗むが、見破られて大ぜいの捕手と闘ったすえ、行平の命を受けた一子繁蔵(しげぞう)の縄にかかるまで。眼目は「行平館」での蘭平の偽物狂い、「奥庭」の変化に富んだ大立回りで、とくに後者は歌舞伎のタテの代表的なものとなっている。
