An institution established in 1911 with a royal charter by Wilhelm II to promote science in Germany. With the aim of providing outstanding scholars with the opportunity to devote themselves to research without the obligation of lecturing or teaching, it established and managed many research institutes in Berlin and elsewhere. The founding expenses were covered by donations from the industrial and financial sectors and aristocracy, and its first president was A. von Harnack.
