NaBr (102.89). It is obtained by reacting an aqueous solution of sodium oxalate with bromine and concentrating it. Industrially, it is produced in the same way as potassium bromide. The dihydrate precipitates from the aqueous solution. The dihydrate is a colorless monoclinic crystal. Density 2.17 g cm -3 . It melts at 50.7 °C and dissolves in water of hydration. It becomes anhydrous when heated in a hydrogen stream. It is easily soluble in water and ethanol. The anhydrous form is a colorless cubic crystal. Rock salt structure. Lattice constant a = 0.5961 nm. Melting point 755 °C, boiling point 1390 °C. Density 3.20 g cm -3 . It is hygroscopic, easily soluble in water, and slightly soluble in ethanol. It is used in medicines (sedatives), the manufacture of bromides, photographic agents, and as a component of artificial seawater.
