1849‐1912 British journalist. His father was a Congregationalist minister. He started working for a trading company in 1863, but after repeated letters to the editor, he was appointed editor of the Darlington newspaper, the Northern Echo, in April 1871. In 1880, he was appointed deputy editor of the Pall Mall Gazette, a high-class London evening paper first published in 1865, and became editor in 1883. His belief in the use of newspapers to improve the "morals of mankind" led him to launch many campaigns that broke with conventional wisdom. Matthew Arnold labeled his works "New Journalism," but he paved the way for the emergence of the 20th century style of popular newspapers.
