Published in 1906 ( Meiji 39 ). Set in Shinshu in the mid-Meiji period, it depicts the anguished life of Segawa Ushimatsu, an elementary school teacher from a discriminated-against community, who resists social prejudice and lies, and breaks his father's command to confess his true identity. A pioneering work of Japanese naturalist literature.
