Breaking the commandments
[1] [noun] Breaking the precepts. When a person who has received the precepts acts in violation of the precepts that he or she is supposed to observe. ⇔ Upholding the precepts. ※Ryōiki (810-824), Vol. 2, "If one breaks the precepts, if one keeps them" [2] A full-length novel by Shimazaki Toson. Published in 1906 ( Meiji 39 ). Set in Shinshu in the mid-Meiji period, it depicts the anguished life of Segawa Ushimatsu, an elementary school teacher from a discriminated-against community, who resists social prejudice and lies, and breaks his father's command to confess his true identity. A pioneering work of Japanese naturalist literature.
