Dankanboku (English name)

Japanese: 段干木 - だんかんぼく（英語表記）Duàn gān Mù

A wise man from the Warring States Wei Dynasty in China. His birth and death years are unknown. Duan Gan was a place name in Wei, which he took as his surname. He studied under Xia, the only son of the Ten Philosophers of Confucius, along with Tian Zifang and Wu Qi. However, unlike his fellow disciples, he did not want to become a government official, and there is an anecdote that he climbed over a wall to avoid Wen Hou of Wei (reigned 445-396 BC), who came to him to persuade him to join the government. Wen Hou always praised him for being a wise man, and whenever he passed by the gate of the village where he lived, he would always bow down in his carriage to show his respects. One theory also says that he made his living as a broker.

中国，戦国魏の賢者。生没年不明。段干は魏の地名で，それを姓とした。田子方，呉起らとともに，孔門十哲の一人子夏に師事したが，同門の諸士と異なり仕官を好まず，仕官を勧めに訪れた魏の文侯(在位，前445‐前396)を避けて牆（かきね）を乗り越えて逃れたという逸話がある。文侯は終始その賢者なるをたたえ，彼の住む村の門前を通り過ぎる際には必ず車上に身を伏せて敬意を表したという。一説に，彼は仲買を生業としていた，ともある。
